IOF arrests 11 in the march towards Jerusalem on Palm Sunday

Latest News, Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, 29 March 2010

Israeli occupation forces arrested 11 Palestinians, including journalists and detained 5 Israelis and internationals. They were part of a protest-procession which moved today from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem towards Jerusalem under the banner of the call for freedom of religion and freedom of worship.
Yesterday, some 150 demonstrators marched to the Israeli checkpoint 300 at Rachel’s Tomb, which isolates Bethlehem and Palestinian West Bank residents from Jerusalem, and crossed the military checkpoint. Trial of human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma

The next hearing in the trial of human rights defender Mr Abdallah Abu Rahma will take place on 24 March 2010 in Ofer, Nothern Israel. Abdallah Abu Rahma is a secondary school teacher and the head of the Bil’in Popular Committee against the Wall, which carries out activities in protest against the wall constructed by the Israeli authorities and which Abdallah Abu Rahma insists violates the economic, social and cultural rights of the Palestinian people. Abdallah Abu Rahma has been in Israeli detention in Ofer Prison since his arrest on 10 December 2009. The Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall was awarded the International League for Human Right’s Carl Von Ossietzky Medal in 2008 for its work in defence of human rights. Open letter to Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs

Palestinian civil society organizations address Baroness Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, during her first visit to Palestine in an open letter, requesting her to:

  • Issue a presidential statement condemning the repression of HRD by Israel;
  • Ensure that, in line with the EU Guidelines for the Protection of HRDs, current EU action in Palestine continues, is institutionalized and is expanded, including public statements;
  • Raise the repression of HRDs with your Israeli counterparts;
  • Raise the continued, illegal construction of the Wall with your Israeli counterparts; and,
  • Refuse to negotiate a new Action Plan with Israel, as this would contradict the stipulations within the previous plan as well as Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, and instead push for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Ni’lin: Israeli forces injure 8 protesters and arrest 17-year old boy

This morning, the Israeli occupation forces have attacked residents of Ni’lin who were gathered in a march to protest the military orders against their village and the provocative Israeli construction close to the Palestinian holy places. The military used tear gas and stun grenades, rubber bullets and live ammunition against the villagers, wounding 8 protesters and arresting Mohammad Atta, 17 years old.

Our Goals

We call upon the international community, including diplomatic missions in the occupied Palestinian territory and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to intervene with Israel for:

• The immediate release of all Palestinian human rights defenders (HRD);
• An end to the Israeli practice of arbitrary detention;
• Full adherence to the ICCPR as applied to the Palestinian population in the OPT; and,
• Full respect of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.
