Latest News, Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, 29 March 2010
Israeli occupation forces arrested 11 Palestinians, including journalists and detained 5 Israelis and internationals. They were part of a protest-procession which moved today from the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem towards Jerusalem under the banner of the call for freedom of religion and freedom of worship.
Yesterday, some 150 demonstrators marched to the Israeli checkpoint 300 at Rachel’s Tomb, which isolates Bethlehem and Palestinian West Bank residents from Jerusalem, and crossed the military checkpoint. Palestinian civil society organizations address Baroness Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, during her first visit to Palestine in an open letter, requesting her to:
- Issue a presidential statement condemning the repression of HRD by Israel;
- Ensure that, in line with the EU Guidelines for the Protection of HRDs, current EU action in Palestine continues, is institutionalized and is expanded, including public statements;
- Raise the repression of HRDs with your Israeli counterparts;
- Raise the continued, illegal construction of the Wall with your Israeli counterparts; and,
- Refuse to negotiate a new Action Plan with Israel, as this would contradict the stipulations within the previous plan as well as Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, and instead push for the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

The following press release was issued by Addameer, The Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign (Stop the Wall) and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) on 9 February 2010:
Special Rapporteurs of the UN Human Rights Council should intervene with relevant Israeli authorities in all cases of Palestinian human rights defenders arrested in relation to their advocacy work on the Wall and its associated, unlawful regime; demand the immediate cessation of the use of impermissible force by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian protestors and pressure Israel to put an end to its policy of arbitrary detention.
